Portland Maine City Hall Wedding/ Samara and Adam

Portland Maine City Hall Wedding

If my 2018 wedding season is anything like my first wedding of the year then it's going to be one amazing year. I was so excited when Samara emailed me in January looking for a photographer for her and Adam's wedding in February. When I found out that they were marrying at one of my all time favorite backdrops- Portland City Hall, I just about jumped out of my seat. I've always loved the architecture of Portland City Hall but had never had the opportunity to go inside and photograph with it's gorgeous staircase. Often times when I shoot there the building is locked since it's only open during regular business hours. It was such a treat to get to use the whole place! They have started offering weekend wedding spots making it an amazing option for a ceremony site in Portland, Maine.

And it somehow gets even better- Samara and Adam decided to do the gender reveal of their baby at the wedding as well. Love, beautiful surroundings and people, AND babies. It's an understatement to say that I felt like one lucky photographer that day. Thank you so much Samara and Adam for having me photograph your wedding. Getting to start 2018 with your special day was an amazing way to kick things off. Congratulations!!!

Tips: Great Getting Ready Photos

As many of my 2016 couples are in the process of planning out their weddings I thought I'd create a few blog posts with tips on how to prepare to get the most out of their wedding photography. I will break these tips down by the part of the day they apply to. The first part of the day I'd like to talk about is the 'Getting ready' portion. I love to photograph this part of the wedding day. Seeing you with your closest friends and family primping and prepping is so fun! The room is filled with great excitement and anticipation. Here are some easy things you can do to get the most out of your wedding photography during the preparation.

Consider your 'Getting Ready' space: A bright, naturally lit space makes for great photos! Big windows, open areas, and light walls will help make your lighting situation ideal.

Tidy up: Do a quick sweep of the room before I get there to pick up any stray trash, or garments that you don't want tossed aside in the background of your photos.

Have your details ready to photograph: The details that I will be photographing the morning of your wedding include your jewelry, shoes, bouquet, invitation suit, hair embellishments, dress, bridesmaid's dresses, pocket squares, tie clips, boutineers, and any other special memento that is important to you.

Speaking of mementos...

Let me know about personal mementoes: Make sure I know about the small personal elements that are a part of your details. This could be a blue heart sewn into the inside of your dress, the inside of a locket, an embroidered handkerchief, anything that has special meaning to you! Of course I will get the obvious things, but if there is something personal you have that you want photographed let me know so we get that shot.

Mail me an invitation!: Add me to your invitation list so that I get a copy ahead of time to bring on the day of to photograph. Like all of your details, it helps tie things together and tell the story of your day.

Have your make up done last: If schedule permits it, having your bridesmaid's hair and make up done before yours is ideal. This way when I get reaction shots of them seeing you in your dress, they won't have curlers in their hair ;)

Mother of the bride
Bridesmaids and Bride

Consider first looks: This doesn't have to be between you and your partner. One of my favorite moments from my last season was the first look we did with Sam and her father. If you want to do a first look we need to work it into your timeline to ensure it doesn't get skipped over.

Bride and Father

Timeline wise, I like to be there an hour before the bride starts her makeup. This gives me enough time to photograph the details, wedding party relaxing together, and then the bride while she is getting the finishing touches of her make up done.

It's very easy to make this part of the day photogenic. These are just some tidbits that might make it even more. With all your pretty details, and the joyful expressions on all of your faces, the amount of great photo opportunities are plenty. Happy planning!

Maine Wedding Inspiration/ Pantone's color of the year

For 2016 Pantone announced not one but TWO colors of the year. A duo if you will. They are, Rose quartz and serenity and they are gorgeous! I love how romantic, ethereal, and delicate they both are while being at the same time so different. Having many similar qualities while being so unlike, make them an intriguing combination that flow together very well.

As a Maine Wedding Photographer I get giddy over wedding details and colors. It's so fun for me to hear what my couples envision for their day and see how it all plays out. I put together a little pinterest board with some of my favorite rose quartz and serenity wedding details for fun.

Morgan Hill Event Center/ Hermon Maine

The next venue in my "places I've photographed weddings" series is, Morgan Hill Event Center in Hermon, Maine

All Maine Wedding Photographers will tell you that the variety of venues across the state is HUGE. You can get married on the beach, on a cliff, in the woods, on a mountain, at a resort...the list is endless. Morgan Hill is located in Hermon, Maine and I've gotten to photograph weddings there a couple of times as well as assist other photographers there. Here are 3 reasons I look forward to shooting at Morgan Hill.

THE SPACE. The space is beautiful and LARGE. If you have your wedding there there will be no bumping into others or cramped feeling. The high ceilings make it feel even more spacious and grand.

ALL IN ONE SPOT: The convenience of being able to have every part of your wedding in one spot is really something to consider when picking your venue. I'm talking about the getting ready portion, the ceremony, and the reception. Additionally Morgan Hill has an in house caterer, making it even more inclusive.

THE SUNSET: If you are getting married at Morgan Hill sunset photos are a MUST. I love to photograph couples in front of the fountain and in the fields during that time of day. The light is golden, low, and beautiful. Some of my favorite pictures ever were taken at Morgan Hill at sunset.

Winter Weddings in Maine

I can't tell you how excited I was to photograph Torey and Justin's wedding! I met with Torey a couple of times in the months leading up to the big day and then with both her and Justin for their engagement session last Fall. I loved listening to all the details while they were coming together and what came together was a gorgeous winter wedding. Here's a peek at their day through mine and my assistant for the day, Rebecca Richards's cameras.
